REPAINTING THE HOUSE

I have been redecorating the house. My husband has finally agreed to let us get a painter! I feel like it has been a decade since we last painted the house. The colors are definitely out of vogue. I have been dreaming about color changes for the last five years. When the year end bonuses rolled around we always found something that needed to be fixed. Last Christmas, we had to replace our furnace. This year, luckily nothing has broken and requires fixing. That means that we had the extra money to paint the house. I have picked the most beautiful shade of powder blue for the kitchen. The living room is going to be painted a pale yellow. I am painting our bedroom a light grey and our bathroom is going to be my favorite color. It is going to be called “alligator tears”, it is a light green color. I have already been getting ready for the painter. I have taken down the pictures off the wall and removed the sockets. I also removed the covers for the Home alarm sensorS. They are coming the first thing in the morning and I couldn’t be more excited!

Everyone kept telling me about Stream energyfor the house but I didn’t listen for the longest time. I don’t know why…it’s not like I don’t like saving money. But when Max lost his job a month ago we kicked things into high gear – saving was no longer something we did for fun it was something we had to do. Anyway, things are looking up because he’s gotten an offer from a great company and we’ve made it by these last few weeks without having to touch our savings. I really wish I had known, though, that it was going to be such a tough month and maybe I would have heeded my friends’ frugal advice sooner rather than later! Anyway, I’m just excited things are back to normal again soon and that Max is going to be working again. It’s really good for his self esteem and I know it means a lot to him to have all of our support. I’ve tried to be as caring as possible during this time!

How to dry your cell phone if it gets wet!

So I woke up this morning and my cell phone fell off my nightstand. I was too lazy to roll over and pick it up so I waited until I got up. 20-30 minutes later I went to retrieve my phone from the floor only to discover it submerged in my cup of water on the floor next to my bed! UGH. So I came across some good hints from mobiledia that I wanted to share in case this happens to you! I currently have my phone in a bag of rice in my fridge!!

There are several ways to save a wet cell phone or GPS device. Some may seem unusual but do you really want to have to purchase another expensive phone and learn a new keyboard for fast text messaging? Here are several steps and methods you can use to try and save your wet cell phone before buying a new one.
1. Obviously the first step is to remove the phone from whatever liquid it was immersed in. Next remove the battery as soon as possible. I can’t overstate how important this step is. The phone is an electronic device and electricity and water do not mix. Leaving the battery in will cause short circuits and damage the phone. If your phone has a SIM card remove that too. Wipe off any excess water with a towel paper or otherwise.

The bad news; it is likely that your battery has been damaged. The good news; most batteries can be replaced for a reasonable price and are certainly cheaper than a new phone. Do not heat the battery under any circumstances; they can explode!

2. Try putting the phone in the refrigerator. This may sound strange because most of us associate heat with the drying process. Actually the refrigerator cools things by drawing moisture out of things. Do not put the phone in the freezer as this can damage the LCD
(Liquid crystal display) After 30 minutes or so, take it out for about 10 minutes, and repeat until the phone is dry.

3. One of the simplest methods is to place the phone on top of a TV, or vent from a cable box or a device which emits a low heat. This can take up to 3 days but it’s better than having to shell out the bucks for a new phone.

4. If your accident happens outdoors miles away from home the simplest way to dry a phone is to place the phone on the dashboard. The car should be parked in a place that gets plenty of sun. After about 2 hours check to see if the screen is fogged. If its still foggy put it back on the dash, if not try putting in the battery and boot up the phone.

5. Another common method used to save a wet cell phone is to place the phone in a container of rice. Remember how Grandma put grains of rice in the salt shaker to keep the salt dry. Rice can absorb an incredible amount of moisture.

6. Other methods along this line involve putting the phone in a sock or pantyhose and placing in a container with silica sand or the new crystal kind of cat litter. On the average these methods take about 3 days to be effective.

7. Try using a compressed air can like the ones sold at computer stores. Hold the can STRAIGHT (holding the can sideways, upside down, or at an angle, will discharge a freezing liquid damaging your phone further) Shoot the air into speaker, mic, keypad, and hard to reach crevices.

8. One of the easiest methods to save a wet cell phone is to use a plain old hair dryer. This method is somewhat controversial. Some sources say that the heat from a hair dryer is too hot. Most hair dryers have a low heat setting and this is the one that should always be used. If the low heat setting on your hair dryer is too hot it is better to use another method.

If your phone was dropped in salt water or water containing an excessive amount of minerals you will have to take some special steps. Salt water will crystallize causing its own set of problems.

9. You may use alcohol or distilled water to flush out contaminants. If you use alcohol it must be at least 95% denatured alcohol. Rubbing alcohol is only 70% and not effective. Be sure to check what the alcohol is denatured with. Do not use anything other than methanol. Any other kind of alcohol can damage your phone. Rinse the phone with alcohol and dry. Alcohol is flammable so this should be done outside or in a well ventilated area.

10. Another way to remove salts and minerals from a wet cell phone is to use distilled water. While not as effective as alcohol, distilled water will dilute minerals and salts. The idea is to get the salts and minerals off the copper parts in the phone before they corrode.

A wet cell phone need not be an expensive tragedy that causes you to sell your old cell phone. All the above steps have been tested and found successful most of the time. The key to saving a wet cell phone is patience. None of the listed methods are quick fixes but they can save you a lot of aggravation and money. While the best case scenario is a dry functional phone accidents do happen. Don’t panic, have patience, and everything should turn out just fine.

Jeff Davis is a consultant for two Philadelphia based companies and has had the unfortunate experience of having his cell phone soaked not once but twice. Mr. Davis experienced his first soaked cell phone at an Eagles game and managed to drop his cell phone in a blue ribbon trout stream in Montana. He did save both wet cell phones and decided to share his information with others unfortunate enough to share this experience.

Kroger Coupon Policy Changes!

I love coupons.... although I am not an extreme couponer. I do not buy 100 of a item at a time. I use 1 MAYBE 2 mustard's a YEAR, I don't need 100 in one shopping trip. But I love to buy 6-10 of an item when I can. Kroger's is modifying their policy, most likely because of TLC's Extreme Couponing show. I knew it would happen as soon as I saw people publicizing that they were getting thousands of dollars worth of items for pennies. Stores can't have that happening obviously. So changes are coming.

To clarify a few of the changes per CincySavers.com......

1. Limit five identical products, not identical coupons. As it was explained to me, you can still buy ten Gatorades, but only five of Grape and five of Orange, and so on. 2. Limit two identical printable coupons. Not two per manufacturer, but two per identical printable coupon.

Road Trip Game

If you have ever driven down I-75 through the Southeast to one of Florida’s biggest attractions, Disney World, you know you pass a ton of bill-boards. After the eighth hour of our drive, the kids were starting to get restless. I decided to introduce them to a game that I played when I was a kid when we were on the way to Disney World. The game consists of finding an advertisement that starts with the letter of the alphabet that you are on. You have to name your letters and remember every one else’s letter before you. At the end of the game “z” you recite the alphabet with your product from the billboard. So the last person has to recite 52 different things. The kids started off quickly, starting with adt orlando for “a”. Once they got to “k” for Krystal, the resitation was much more difficult. Finally, “z” for Orlando zoo rolled around. Two hours had passed and the kids were ready to take a nap! What a perfect road trip game!

My brother and I decided to move in together to save some money last year. He had recently been laid off and I was always down for saving a buck, plus he was much cleaner than me and knew a lot about finances! It’s been pretty good so far, minus a few butting heads moments over things like laundry, but I like how much closer Dan and I are getting and I also like saving money on rent every month. I think he feels the same way and he’s even helped me a lot with things like renegotiating my car payment and even lowering our energy payments by researching sites like SHOPelectricityRATEsTEXAS.com. I didn’t even know things like that existed before Dan! I’m definitely the more loosey goosey of the two of us but I know he loves me for it. My parents are thrilled their kids are living together, even though they really wish we’d both get married sometime soon! Dan is a great roommate and I don’t think I’ll have another until that day comes!

Cookies and Cream Ice cream cake

My stepson wanted a Cookies & Cream ice cream cake for his Birthday this year (Which is on the 4th of July). He does not like chocolate cake and every place I called had pre-made Cookies and Cream cakes with either NO cake in them, or Chocolate cake. Plus they were $25 or more! I figured I'd make my own using the cake he liked for a fraction of the cost!
I spent less than $8 on the ingredients.

(1) Gallon of Cookies & Cream Ice cream (Softened)
(1) Pint of Cookies & Cream Ice Cream *
(1) Container of Oreo Cookies
(1) Large container of Whipped Cream
(1) Box of Cake Mix (Baked two cakes but only used 1 in this recipe...just iced the other for a basic cake)
(1) Spring Form Pan

Bake cake as directed on box.

Place cookies in a bag and crumble with your hands or a rolling pin. Reserve 12 or so to use for decorating your cake later.

Place crumbled cookies in a bowl and add about 1/4 cup of melted butter and mix with your hands.

Press cookie mixture into the bottom of a spring form pan.
Freeze for 15 minutes to let set.

Smooth 1/2 of the softened ice cream evenly on top of cookie crumbs.

Slice top of cake off to allow a flattened layer for the next step.

Place bottom half of cake on top of ice cream layer.

Smooth remaining softened ice cream on top of cake layer.
Press it down between the pan and cake sides to fill it in.
* NOTE: I did go get another 1/2 pint of ice cream to smooth it all out nicely.

Cover pan with foil and freeze overnight.

Run a knife or spatula around sides of the cake to help release it from the pan.
Then open the spring form pan and remove.
Leave bottom of pan in place.

Open refrigerated Whipped Cream and begin to "ice" the cake.
I had to return it in the freezer for a few minutes because it was getting too soft, then began icing it again.

Decorate remaining cake with icing and return to freezer until ready to serve.

Let me tell you it was a HUGE hit at the 4th of July/Birthday party!
Imagine the ice cream and cake combinations you can do!

It is SO worth it to check out all the deals in your store circular AND WALK through the store to write down what you see on sale, then go back and sort through your coupon binder and pull the coupons to match the sales. You will start saving big. I just bring my binder to every trip to Krogers, Walmart, Walgreens etc just in case I see something on sale I can snag it with my coupons.

As an engineer, I love making my own hours and tinkering with new inventions all day long. There’s nothing that gives me more satisfaction than inventing something useful that will sell in the open market. I try to keep my network of engineering houses large so that when I’m done creating I have an avenue to sell, but it’s difficult since I don’t work in an office. I really like having a WirelessInternet connection so I can send emails and receive blueprints wherever I am, which can be anywhere from a coffee shop to a motorcycle garage. I like working with my hands, so this profession was really ideal for me, and I’ve loved being an entrepreneur. I can’t imagine any other type of work and I feel so accomplished at the end of a long day. It’s nice having a product to show for it, as well! I’m thinking of getting a personal website up and running so I have somewhere to display my inventions but that may be a few months away.

How to save money with Coupons!

I've started really getting into coupons and savings. I do take my coupon binder to stores and search the store ads and online for sales. And every once in a while if I need to make a big shopping trip, I do go to my main store (Krogers) and walk the isles and write down sales. Then I compare those to coupons at home. They have good Mega sales and 10 for 10 items that are great to combine with your coupons so it's worth the isle walking because they don't show all their sales in their printed ads!

I wanted to give you a few steps to help you start to save. Once you get started you will find it so much fun. You will organize your coupon binder differently than I do, you will sort your coupons differently and you find what works best to help you save. But in the end, you should do these things:

1) Buy more than one newspaper! OR ask others to give you their inserts.
2) Carry a coupon binder!
3) Search for things on sale 1.99 or under.
4) Check out Couponmom.com and let her do the work!

1) Buy more than one newspaper! OR ask others to give you their inserts.
You need 4-5 inserts per Sunday paper in order to save big. I sometimes get 6 depending on what is in the coupon inserts. You can preview Sunday Coupon Inserts HERE. If one deodorant is on sale for $1.29 and you have ONE .50 cent coupon (my store doubles it to $1), then you can get ONE deodorant for .29 cents. Great, right? Well, if you have FOUR or SIX coupons for .50 cents each (doubled to $1) then you can get FOUR or SIX deodorants for .29 each. So you can stock pile those until the next sale.

Krogers had Crest toothpaste on sale 10 for 10 (buy 10 participating items get them for $1.00 each) . I had TEN 1.00 coupons in my binder so I got TEN tubes of toothpaste free! The key is to look for sales, check your coupons and buy when things are on sale when you can.

Try to clip and save all coupons in your binder. You can't always be brand specific when using coupons. The deodorant you like may not be on sale for pennies like another brand, but if you can get it for pennies or free, why not try it. Donate it if you want to also!

2) Carry a coupon binder!

It may seem like a lot of work, but it is really fun once you start and it's the best way to find those deals. I sit down after my daughter is in bed and organize my coupons while I watch television. I organize mine by my store layout. I don't get all neat and fancy when organizing as you can see by this photo. This day I was organizing coupons and looking through store ads on my bed while my daughter played in her room. You can get baseball card insert pages at any store (I got mine at Target), which work great for displaying them in your book.

3) Search for things on sale 1.99 or under!
When I'm shopping, I always detour down the cleaning isle and the health and beauty isles. I look for wipes, cleaners, deodorants, shampoos, lotions, hand soap, toothpaste etc that may be on sale for less than 1.99. Because my coupons can be doubled at Krogers, any .50 coupons or more will actually be $1 coupons. So anything less than 1.99 you can get for pennies! (Just watch if the coupon has a size specification). These are great items to stock pile because they won't go bad and are always useful.

4) Check out Couponmom.com and let her do the work!

All you have to do is print her list and cut your coupons. I prefer to keep the coupons I use a lot or think I can get a good deal on clipped and in my binder so they are close at hand, but I also put the additional inserts in a stand up file system shown below for easy reference.

Spent a little over $14.00 on these items!
The gain sheets were .12 cents each box!

Here are just SOME of the items I picked on a Krogers shopping trip!
Total grocery amount $302.51 and only paid $173.74!
$128.77 SAVINGS!
$7.00 of that total was on 4 Sunday Papers, so technically I spent $166.74 on groceries.

$54.08 of items for $13.46. That's a 75% savings!
All this toothpaste was FREE and the dove was .29 cents each!

Today's Walmart Savings....spent a little over $14.00 on these things. Used a $3.00 Gain coupon from this weeks 2/13 Red Plum insert made these 80 count dryer sheet .12 cents each. 35 count Lysol wipes were $2.00 and I had $1.00 coupon so a buck each. Lysol Spray I had a $1.50 off each coupon (should have gotten more but didn't)... Wiskas had $1.00 off 2 and depending on the flavor were about $1.08 each so made them .50 each.

Got a lot of newspapers this week and working on cutting and organizing them for my next savings trip somewhere! :)

Sunday Morning Grocery Trip!

I have always been one to use coupons, but never one who can save BIG and guy a lot of items for little cost. But recently I've come to a realization that I need to figure out how to get a lot of items at little or no cost! I spent 2 days trying to figure out my coupons. I only had 1 Sunday paper insert so I wasn't going to get a lot of items. So I called my friend to see if she had any coupons she wouldn't use and printed a lot out as well.
I also found a lot of good coupons on Ebay. Just go there and type in the coupon your looking for and you will find 15-20 of them for $1.00. Just watch the expiration date, because some are up really soon and unless you get them quick and plan on using them, you don't want them. I look for the dates that are a month or more out.

So today I saved $128.77 for my first big trip! I plan to get better and save more in the future. But the total would have been $302.51 which I NEVER spend on groceries, EVER. And with my savings I spent what I normally would $173.74. $7 of that total was for 4 Sunday Papers so technically I spent $166.74 on groceries. Yeah!

Cleaning My Keyboard! Hint & Tip.

I was cleaning my computer and just couldn't get all the lint, hair and dust out from under the key's. The "dust off" wasn't cutting it. While it did get a lot of things out, it didn't help for that lint or hair that was stuck around the keys. So I decided to grab some double sided tape and start running it between and under the keys. That helped SO much because it could get a hold of the fuzz and things and pull them out.

Just wanted to share a tip!

Double sided tape ran between the keys is great to grab a hold of that hairs, lint and fuzz!

Homemade Treasure Hunt for kids!

Treasure hunts are great for any kid! I watch my nephews sometimes during the week and they love this game along with my daughter. All I do is draw a few pictures on some paper, cut them out and those are their clues to follow the treasure. I hide the around the house and the hunt begins.

For example, I give them a clue that would lead them to the mail box. Then in the mail box they would find the next "clue" (or folded piece of paper with another drawing on it). Let's say the find the picture of the sofa on it... so they go to the sofa and look for the next clue. And so on and so on until they get to the final treasure. I put some large novelty coins in a bag and they find those as their treasure. But it could be real money or candy, whatever you decide.

Just a fun rainy day game for anyone to come up with for nothing!

If you like rewards programs and like to shop, you should consider becoming a panelist on the Nielson National Consumer Panel . You can gain points for scanning your purchases and taking surveys that can be redeemed for a number of gifts.

You can go to their site to register and see if any scanners are available, or be put on a list to receive one when it becomes available. Every purchase you make should be scanned from groceries to clothing, gas, fast food, photo processing, drug store purchases and a lot more.

I am a member of NCP online and I love it. However it does take a long time to add up the points to get anything that matters. Once a week you transmit all your purchases that you scanned into your computer and you get points for that week. The longer your a member the more points you get each week that you transmit. I do all the surveys on their website and get extra points that way as well. But if your a member of anything that has reward points (Pampers, Huggies, PNC Points, or Banks etc) you know that the nice prizes like televisions etc take a LONG time to save for.

But this program is very interesting and I would recommend it if your a shopper!

I have been knitting all my life. It started when I was a small child and would sit beside my grandmother as she did her daily knitting. Being an inquistive child, I was always asking her questions about knitting and "why you do this?" and "why you do that?" One day, she surprised me with my own pair of knitting needles. Over time, she taught me the basics of knitting and helped me start and master many projects.

Nowadays, I enjoy knitting while watching Direc 4 U TV. I have spent hours making afghans, scarves, and slippers. Slippers are the most common item I knit for the family but afghans are my favorite. There is nothing like having a warm afghan for those cold windy days.

I also love to knit baby sets such as sweaters, hats, booties, and mittens. These are so much fun to make and the color choices are endless. This seems to be a homemade gift that all new moms appreciate. Gifts of this sort are priceless, because while the baby may get a lot of use out of it, it is still something that can be put away as a keepsake.

Lime Away and hard water stains in fridge!

It was time to tackle the nasty hard to clean water dispenser in the fridge! We are having a party so I decided I'd better work on it. I usually just rub it down and try other cleaners with no luck. So I decided to use some Lime Away this time, because after all it is hard water stains.

YUCK

Spray it good and let it sit a while so it can do it's thing!

Before I used this toothbrush I did wipe it down and a nice majority of gunk came out.
But I decided to give it a little more elbow grease and scrub.

If I worked harder and had a scraper I could get it all off, but this was enough for me! I have a lot of other cleaning to concentrate on so I'll call this one done for now!

I thought that for Christmas this year I would try and DIY a lot of the presents that I'm giving to people, as a kind of challenge to myself and also to just save a few bucks here and there. I also have all of these craft supplies laying all over my house that I've gotten on sale and actually need to do something with them.

I had heard that the key to DIY-ing all your holiday gifts is to plan way ahead of time, so I did that by about a month. Kroger Brands replacing name brands?

I have noticed a lot more that Kroger is replacing name brands with their brands. Don't get me wrong, I love Kroger brands for the most part. The pricing is great. But lately I have not been able to find a lot of name brand items I use to buy in my Kroger's store. I went to the manufacturer website of the items to verify they were still available and they are. They gave me a list of the stores that carry the items I am looking for. Meijer, Target and Sams were top on their list of people who carried the items that Kroger's is not anymore. So I decided to contact Krogers also to let them know what I'm looking for, hoping they will carry them again. I really don't want to make different trips just to purchase what I'm looking for.

Just wondering if anyone else is noticing this with Kroger stores at all and have you wrote them about it or talked to the store manager?

Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas

One of my favorite non animated holiday specials is Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas. I loved it as a child and was pleasantly surprised to see it listed on Direct TV Specials recently. It was great to watch such a classic special with my family.

The plot is pretty basic and is mostly about the giving nature of the holiday season. Christmas is approaching and Emmet is looking for money to buy a gift for his mother. There is a talent contest and the grand prize winner is promised a $50 prize. Emmet starts a jug band with his friends but the only obstacle in winning the talent show is the Riverbottom Gang. The puppetry is spectacular and my kids immediately asked if we could purchase a copy for our DVD library.

This is a wonderful non-animated production by Jim Henson and Frank Oz. It brings great childhood Christmas memories to mind every time that I watch it. It was great to be able to introduce such a classic to my children. The world today is so busy and technology based. Sometimes it's nice to turn the computer off and put away the cell phone and watch some great Christmas classics.

White Chocolate and M&M Pretzels

Look at this cute idea! You may have seen it, but I never have. After I saw a friend make them, I had to rush home and make my own. YUM! What a great filler in your home made Holiday cookie mix or even an entire tin full for a friend or office worker!

What you need:
(1) 16oz bag of white chocolate (Toll House for example).
(1) TBSP shortening
Bag of M&Ms
Bag of round pretzels

Line a baking sheet with wax paper and cover it in a single layer of pretzels. Put the chocolate and shortening in a microwave dish. Heat and stir until melted. I start with about 45 seconds and then stir, then put back in for a bit longer if needed. Use a spoon to put the white chocolate into the circles and add an M&M. After all the pretzels are filled, put the baking sheet into the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to set. Let sit at room temperature for about an hour after that before enclosing them in any bags or tins to avoid any condensation.

Ok so I thought this was a great deal! I was shopping online at Toys R Us for Christmas and thought I'd use the Free Shipping to my advantage. I got to the $100 purchase required and realized the small print under the red letters says UP TO $20 value! With the recent recall of Graco Strollers, I was wondering how long one should be used. I browsed around the Graco site after reading up on the recall and found some fabulous information on expiration dates on car seats. I've seen a few that look expired, but didn't know they actually had a date imprinted on it.

Check out the manufacturers website for your car seat to see if they also have expiration dates and what the recommendations may be for continued use.

So before you borrow that used car seat from your neighbor, check it out and see if it has a date on it. Safety is the most important thing when it comes to children in car seats.

Bundt Shaped Pumpkin Cake

So I saw someone on television mMake a pumpkin cake out of a bundt cake. Mine by faI r does NOT compare to what I saw on TV, but I wanted to share it anyway! I have been wanting to try that new glazed icing by Duncan Hines called Amazing Glazes and thought this was perfect for it.

What you need:
Bundt Cake Pan
Two cake mixes
White Amazing Glazes by Duncan Hines
White Frosting
Food coloring
Icecream cone

I started with two bundt cakes (made from your favorite cake mix). I used chocolate and yellow mix for variety. I chose Pillsbury mix because there were baking instructions on the back for a bundt cake pan.

After cooled, turn them over and slice the bottom off of each so they are flat when they are placed together. Otherwise it will look like a snowman body instead of a pumpkin shape.

Place the two cut sides of the cake together so the cakes are on top of each other. I used the white frosting in between the layers to adhere the cakes slightly.

Take the Amazing Glazes and microwave according to instructions on back. Open and add red and yellow food coloring to obtain a desired orange glaze. I used about 3- 4 drops of red and 5-6 drops of yellow to obtain this lighter color orange. I recommend doing this on wax or parchement paper to catch all the drips, and there will be plenty.

Mix blue and yellow food coloring in the remaining white frosting to obtain a green color.

I used this for the "grass" at the bottom and the leaves and vines on the top.

Use a sandwich bag with an icing tip to draw on some grass around the bottom and the leaves and vines on the top of the pumpkin. Place a chocolate icecream cone in the center for a stem.
My grass did not turn out how I expected and next time I'll spend more time on it! I was just trying to fill in the chocolate cake on the bottom as much as I could.

Motion Security Light in your closet!

We recently made a trip the hardware store because the pull chain on our light in the closet came out for the hundredth time! We were going to figure out how to put a "do it yourself" light switch in the closet using a lot of extra materials to run the cord on the outside of the wall and cover it up.

The man at the Hardware store suggested a less expensive and easier way to do it. He said to take an outdoor motion security light and use that instead. It's an easy install, no pull chains or switches and kids don't have to remember to turn out the light. It's perfect! We have it set to only stay on for 1 minute after the motion starts and we put just one regular 75 watt bulb in it.

Such a great idea and I love it! Just thought I'd share!

RECIPE - Meat Loaf Parmesan

1 pound lean ground beef
1/2 cup spaghetti sauce of your choice, divided
1/2 cup of dry Italian bread crumbs
1/2 cup 2 oz Kraft (or store brand) Parmesan cheese, divided
1/2 cup finely chopped onion
1 egg, beaten
1/2 tsp Italian seasoning

MIX thoroughly (with hands) meat, 1/4 cup spaghetti sauce, bread crumbs, 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese, chopped onion, beaten egg and Italian seasoning.

SHAPE into a loaf in a 12x8 baking dish. Top with remaining 1/4 cup (or more) of spaghetti sauce and 1/4 cup (or more) of cheese. NOTE: I use a spoon and spread extra sauce all over the top and let it run down the sides and sprinkle extra cheese all over the top to cover it.

BAKE at 375 for 40-45 minutes or until done to your desire.

SIDE DISH OPTIONS: Green Beans, Garlic Mashed Potatoes

IN PAN READY TO BAKE

AFTER 40-45 MINUTES IN THE OVEN
Slice and serve with green beans and garlic mashed potatoes.

Tackle It Tuesday - Easy Snack

Today I'm tackling an easy snack! This can be put together in 5 or 10 minutes and only takes a few minutes to broil. A great appetizer or party food.

Wheat Bread (I used BrownBerry)
Tomato slices (Great if you have a tomato garden in the works!)
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Italian Seasoning
Provolone Cheese

Take sliced bread and layer tomatoes, sprinkle of Olive Oil, sprinkle Italian Seasoning and top with provolone cheese. Put under the broiler on a bottom shelf in the oven. If you put it too close to the top or on a high broil, the bread will burn fast. You can try to cover the edges of the bread with the cheese and that will bubble nicely instead of the bread burning.

Keep an eye on it until the cheese is melted and is bubbled and brown...approx 3-5 minutes.
ENJOY!

SIDE NOTE:
You could toast the bread lightly before you put the toppings on so that the middle isn't soggy, depends on how you like your!

Organize Your Car For A Road Trip! Games, Safety and more!

With summer starting, vacations are being planned and those long road trips may be painful for some! Especially with little ones who don't like sitting for so long. We were planning a 20 hour road trip (20 hours one way and 20 hours back!) this summer and I've been thinking of ways to help the car feel more comfortable and fun if it happens.

First, some great sites to help figure your gas costs for your trip.

SAFETY
1) Have a mechanic give your car a once over. Change the oil, fill your tires, check the brakes and all the lights (interior and exterior) on your car to make sure they are all working.

2) Have a fire department check that your car seat (if using one) is installed properly. It's free and you want the best installation for long rides.

3) Have a first aid kit with the necessities. Band aids, cleanser and gauze for example.

4) Make sure to keep an emergency car kit in the trunk. It may very well come in handy on those long road trips with a lot of miles between rest stops and exits.

5) NEVER tell anyone when you are going out of town. Especially on Myspace, Facebook and Twitter. You may think you know your friends, but sometimes you don't s. You could let the local police department know and they sometimes will drive by often to keep an eye out. Stop your mail and paper delivery also so they don't pile up and alert people you are not home.

FRONT SEAT
Have everything within reach. Sunglasses, Maps, Tissues, Wet Wipes, magazines or books and car phone charger for example should all be close. Consider using a car visor organizer to put CD's and Maps/directions above your sun visor and even consider a sun visor extension for those sunny highways.

BACK SEAT
1) Get a back seat organizer and/or a travel tray. I picked up this Kids Lap Tray at my local Michaels Crafts for just $3.50 on sale. Great for coloring, reading books or even eating on the go.

2) Put a small cooler between the back two seats. You could use this as a table and drinks are within close reach. You can always put a larger one in the truck or back of the vehicle filled with the majority of the drinks, then just transfer some to the smaller front cooler at gas stops.

3) Have pillows and blankets close by for those nap times. There is nothing worse than a stiff neck when you wake up after sleeping sitting up in a car!

4) Keep snacks together and bring small containers or plastic bowls to put snacks in. This way you don't have a box being passed around the car and everyone has their own portions. We like crackers, cereal bars, suckers, dried fruit, Goldfish S'mores, nuts, bananas, cookies, granola bars, You can even bring milk in the cooler and boxes of cereal.

5) Carry a sun shade in your car. We have used this to block our front window at a rest stop that we have slept in during a long road trip. It's just a little extra privacy so people aren't watching you sleep in the front seat. I've even gotten a few extra for the driver and passenger windows if you don't have tinted windows. You can find them at any Target, Walmart or even a local auto parts store.

6) A PORTABLE POTTY! If you have little ones, it is a must to carry their portable potty in your car for those emergencies. I can't tell how handy this is in emergencies! I just bring the seat we used when she was first potty training like below, but there are others styles.

GAMES FOR THE ROAD!
Make sure to take coloring books, crayons, work books, small puzzles, travel games, Vinyl Sticker Play Scenes and a portable DVD if possible! There are some great car trip books also like "52 Fun Things to do in the Car", "Miles of Smiles", "TravelMates; Fun Things Kids Can Do In The Car" and don't forget "Mad Libs".

How to save money using coupons and sales

Since I'm still trying to figure out how to save BIG at the grocery etc, I've been surfing around for tips on how to save using more than just your Sunday coupons. I came across this video I wanted to share because it has some good tips. I think my problem with trying to save big, is the items I normally use are never on sale or have coupons. You almost have to buy brands of deodorant or shampoo etc that you don't normally use in order to save. BUT, I guess if your basically getting them for FREE, why not right?? Gotta change my thinking if I want to get things free or extremely discounted!

We Finally Have Gotten Moved Into Our New Home!

"After many months of planning and constructing our new home, I am happy to say we have finally gotten all moved in. I feel like the weight of the world is now lifted off of my shoulders. No more trying to make a decision on color we should paint the walls, what typing of flooring would be best suited for each room and no more looking for the perfect window treatments. Thank goodness!

Of course there was also the task of signing up for satellite and internet service. Luckily, they were both very painless tasks and I found a great ISP in my area. The actual move itself went very smooth, we were able to get everything moved in just a few days. Unpacking, well, that was a different story but we all survived.

All in all, things went very well and all the hard work was well worth the reward. Now that it is all done I can just relax and enjoy our new home with my family."

All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues

As I was watching the rerun of a season one episode on the series "Lost" (on HD thanks to Direct TV HD receivers!), I was mystified by the title. I would assume that cowboy refers to the sawyer charter only because he is the only cowboy type character however, this episode focuses very little on Sawyer.

In the last episode the mysterious Ethan character drags off Charlie and pregnant Clair. Jack, Kate, Locke, and Boone go out looking for them. This episode picks up while the search party is still out looking for the two missing survives. While there is one scene where Sawyer is talking to Walt, Michael’s son, it wouldn't justify the title of this episode of "Lost".

The only thing I can figure this title refers to is Charlie’s failure to protect Clair. Charlie is feeling like a failure after he lets Ethan escape with Clair and the baby she is carrying. I wouldn't classify the Charlie character as the cowboy type, maybe cowboy junkie, but not in the western cowboy sense. This episode leaves viewers wondering what exactly was meant by the psychic's plead to have Clair raise her baby. Was this baby not meant to have Charlie as a substitute father either?

Of course at the end the writers of "Lost" leave us hanging again. While Jack and Kate return to camp with a much abused Ethan in tow, Locke and Boone are still out in the jungle. Boone is just about ready to return to camp when they both discover some kind of metal object beneath the forest floor. This object, I'm sure, will be the topic of the next episode and is sure to leave more questions than answers.

I use to plant a small garden with just tomatoes in it, but have let the grass take it over during the past years. Our retaining wall is falling apart and every year I say we need to fix it, but the cost to have it replaced is just too much. So I thought I'd be safe making my garden again this year! I am only doing Tomatoes and Green Peppers this year. Some day I'll have a huge garden with a lot of things, but I'll start small! So here is the process so far.

I love coupons, especially since I've made my new coupon book. WHICH by the way I used the other day for the first time and it was wonderful. So handy! I pulled all the coupons while I made my list and put them in an envelope with my items written on it. Then when I went through isles I would look for other things on sale (not on my list) and just just flip through the pages to see if I had a coupon. SO HANDY! Highly recommended for you all to try!

Organizing your Baking Spices and Medicine

I found some inexpensive lazy Susans a long time ago and have them in my pantry to store medicine and my baking spices (sprinkles, cupcake paper cups, baking soda etc). I love the lazy Susan because you can turn it easily to see everything. I also have some plastic bins off to the right that hold band-aids, antiseptic, gauze and baby items. This makes it easy to just snag the whole container and go if an emergency arises.
